Smoke & Heat Alarm Installation in Bristol

A working smoke alarm is one of the simplest ways to protect a household, yet many homes still rely on a single battery unit on the landing.

At HB Electrical, we supply and fit mains-powered, interlinked smoke and heat alarms for homeowners and landlords across Bristol and the surrounding areas.

When one alarm sounds, they all sound, giving everyone in the house an early warning. That extra time matters most at night, when everyone is asleep behind closed doors.

Early warning, wherever you are in the house.

The Right Alarm in the Right Place

Placement makes as much difference as the alarms themselves. Smoke alarms go on escape routes such as hallways and landings, and in rooms where a fire is more likely to start.

Kitchens get a heat alarm instead, because cooking fumes and steam from the kettle set off smoke alarms far too often, and nuisance alarms tend to get disconnected.

We look at the layout of your home, how you use each room and where people sleep, then recommend sensible alarm positions before any work begins.

BS 5839-6, Explained Simply

BS 5839-6 is the British Standard for fire detection and alarm systems in homes. It sets out how an alarm system should be powered and built (its grade) and how much of the home it should cover (its category).

A typical recommendation for a house is mains-powered alarms with a standby battery, covering the escape routes plus the rooms where fires most often begin.

We explain what that means for your property and what level of cover we’d suggest, without overcomplicating it.

Planning New Alarms?

Alarms are often fitted alongside a full rewire or consumer unit upgrade, when cables are already being run and floors or ceilings are open. They can also be added on their own, with cable routes planned to keep disruption low.

Once installed, every alarm is tested, the interlink is checked from each unit and we show you how to test and silence them. Every job is priced with a free, fixed quote.

“Harry and co Wired an extension in Filton for us, reasonable price and very easy to work with, there was also an existing intermittent tripping fault on the main house which was causing the tenants real problems, I had two other electricians come out and blame the fridge then freezer then dishwasher and so on, I asked harry to take a look and he identified the issue and sorted on the day, I wouldn’t go anywhere other than Hb electrical for future work.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a smoke alarm and a heat alarm?

A smoke alarm detects smoke particles in the air, so it responds early to most fires. A heat alarm reacts to a rapid rise in temperature instead. Heat alarms are used in kitchens because cooking fumes and steam would set off a smoke alarm too often. Interlinked, the two types give early warning across the home without constant false alarms.

What does interlinked mean?

Interlinked alarms are connected to each other, either by cable or by a wireless link. When one alarm detects smoke or heat, every alarm in the system sounds. That means a fire starting in the kitchen downstairs will wake people sleeping upstairs, even with doors closed. It gives everyone in the home more time to get out safely.

What do landlords in England need to provide?

Under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022, landlords of rented homes in England must fit at least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers). Alarms must work at the start of each tenancy and be repaired or replaced once reported faulty. We can fit and test alarms for landlords.

Do mains-powered alarms still work in a power cut?

Yes. The mains-powered alarms we fit have a built-in back-up battery, so they keep working if the power goes off. Many use a sealed battery designed to last the life of the alarm. Each alarm still needs testing regularly, usually by pressing its test button, and we show you how to do that before we leave.

Can you fit alarms during a rewire or consumer unit upgrade?

Yes, and it is often the best time to do it. During a rewire, cables can be run to each alarm position while floors and ceilings are open, which keeps the finish tidy. Alarms can also be added alongside a consumer unit upgrade. If you only need alarms fitted, we can do that on its own and plan cable routes to keep disruption low.
