PAT Testing in Bristol

Portable appliance testing checks the electrical equipment people plug in and use every day: kettles, computers, extension leads, heaters, vacuum cleaners and power tools.

At HB Electrical, we test for landlords, offices, shops, hotels and care settings across Bristol and the surrounding areas, labelling every item and providing a full record.

Safe appliances. Clear records.

Inspection First, Then Testing

Each item gets a careful visual inspection of the plug, cable and casing, followed by electrical tests suited to how the appliance is built.

Many faults are found by eye alone, such as a damaged flex, a cracked plug or the wrong fuse, so the inspection matters as much as the test meter.

It’s a practical way to show equipment is being looked after.

Records You Can Rely On

Every tested item is labelled with its result and the date, and you receive a full record listing each appliance, where it is and how it performed.

That record, along with a certificate, gives you something clear to keep on file for insurers, auditors or your own records.

We keep visits organised and arrange them around your working day, so staff and residents are disturbed as little as possible.

How Often Should Appliances Be Tested?

There is no single fixed legal interval for PAT testing. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment used at work to be maintained so it does not cause danger, and the IET Code of Practice guides how often checks should happen.

The right frequency depends on the risk: the type of equipment, how often it’s used and the environment it’s in. A power tool on a busy site needs checking more often than a desktop computer in a quiet office.

“Harry and co Wired an extension in Filton for us, reasonable price and very easy to work with, there was also an existing intermittent tripping fault on the main house which was causing the tenants real problems, I had two other electricians come out and blame the fridge then freezer then dishwasher and so on, I asked harry to take a look and he identified the issue and sorted on the day, I wouldn’t go anywhere other than Hb electrical for future work.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PAT testing?

PAT stands for portable appliance testing. It is a visual inspection and electrical test of equipment that plugs into a socket, such as kettles, computers, heaters and extension leads. The inspection looks for damage to plugs, cables and casings, and the test checks things like earth continuity and insulation. Each item is then labelled with its result and recorded.

How often does PAT testing need to be done?

There is no single fixed legal interval. The law requires electrical equipment used at work to be kept safe, and the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment helps set a sensible frequency based on risk. The type of equipment, how often it is used and where it is used all make a difference. We can suggest suitable intervals for your site.

Do landlords need PAT testing?

Landlords must make sure any electrical appliances they supply with a property are safe. PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement for landlords, but it is a widely used way to check supplied appliances and keep a clear record that they were safe at the start of a tenancy. We test appliances in rental properties across Bristol and provide labels and records for your files.

What happens if an appliance fails?

We label the item clearly as failed so it is taken out of use, and explain in plain words why it did not pass. Some faults, such as a worn plug or the wrong fuse, can often be fixed on the day and the item retested. Where an appliance is not worth repairing, we tell you so and note it in your records.

What records do I receive?

Every tested item is labelled with its result and test date. You also receive a full record listing each appliance, its location and how it performed, along with a certificate for the visit. These documents are useful for insurers, auditors and your own maintenance records, and they make it easy to plan the next round of testing.
